2022 Wedding Trends From W Kuala Lumpur’s Perspective

2020 and 2021 saw a halt in nuptial ceremonies around the world. And experts say that 2022 will be the biggest year for weddings, and even the year after. This is clearly evident as we have been witnessing a myriad of weddings take place over the past month or so. Indeed, venues and vendors alike have been fielding requests from soon-to-be-weds too.

To see what lies in store in the year ahead, we speak to Kimberly Tay, Wedding Planner for W Kuala Lumpur on the upcoming trends in 2022 :

A private affair – trend of the micro, intimate weddings. Constant postponements mean that dates keep changing. Not everyone can make it on the new dates, so couples are choosing to have smaller weddings with close friends and family. The happy couple also has time to enjoy their own wedding with everyone in attendance.

Weekday weddings. As weddings will surge this year, couples are getting creative by having their big day celebrated over a weekday instead of weekends. Venues prefer them because it is additional revenue on top of their already popular weekends; and couples get a better rate or discounts too! A win-win situation for both parties.

Virtual ‘Save-the-date’. With the ever-changing dates, wedding e-invites or virtual save-the-dates are here to stay. It is also a much more sustainable option for the Millenials and Gen-Zs.

Multiple celebrations; often with destination weddings. To avoid crowds, couples are opting to choose a formal celebration for family, followed by a destination wedding with friends. People are also ready to travel now, granted travel restrictions allow. Destination weddings are also less formal, so less planning needed!

Alternative to florals as decoration. Couples are opting for greenery or potted plants that double as gifts to guests as an alternative to flowers. Artistic light installations too are expected to take centrestage in 2022.
